adjective
1. not revealing one's thoughts or feelings readily
2. restrained in expression, presentation, or appearance
Being a musician is about allowing ourselves to be vulnerable. Whether it’s putting ourselves out into the world via a recording or a live performance, it means putting ourselves out for everyone to hear, judge, and analyze. This can be a difficult thing for many of us to accomplish, but also can be intensely rewarding and liberating as one lets their creativity flow. The Reticent to me symbolizes the introverted, guarded, somewhat inhibited person I am that struggles with allowing myself to be vulnerable. However, when paired with the more gregarious guitar (and perhaps also with the always appreciated extroverted front man), I allow all those bottled up thoughts and feelings to flow freely. I don’t want a loud or obnoxious strap to tell my story. I want the thick, strong, durable comfort of an Anthology Gear full grain leather strap ... rugged, honest, beautifully imperfect. And I’ll tell my story through my music. Reticently.
Width:
• Available in 2" and 3" width
• We offer a 2" width for those looking for a more streamlined look. If you're looking for the most comfortable strap, we recommend the 3" width. The 3" does more work to distribute the weight of the guitar.
Length:
• Strap adjusts from 39" - 54" (See our Instragram post for Tongue Tying Tricks)
• For a long guitar strap (adjusts from 54" - 63"), add optional Jumbo Tongue (sold separately).
Top Leather: Aged Steel (rugged full-grain leather)
Bottom Leather: Deer Black (soft full-grain leather)
Full Grain Leather All Anthology leather guitar and bass straps are hand-made with the absolute finest quality full-grain leathers in the world. Our leathers are chosen for their ability to fully distribute the weight of the guitar across the strap, for a more comfortable playing experience on those long gigs.
Your guitar strap may feel a little stiff at first - that's just the thickness and strength of full grain leather. Like a new pair of high quality leather boots, you need to break it in. The more you wear your guitar strap, the softer it will get.
To top it off, our leather burnishes and beautifies with use. All of our leather guitar straps have their natural marks, scrapes and scars, which means they have loads of raw, rugged personality.
Padded for Comfort Our leather guitar straps are not only great looking, they're also super-comfortable. Between two layers of full-grain leather, we use a high-density, premium padding to maximize comfort without sacrificing strength. Although not as thick as some padded straps out there, our premium padding will not break down over time. We give the guitarist the best of both worlds, a streamlined padded guitar strap. Comfortable and durable with style!
Industrial Grade Thread Even better, we use only the strongest industrial grade threads, the same threads used to make parachutes and airbags. That's strength you can trust.
Satisfaction Guaranteed All leather pieces offered by Anthology are protected by a 30-day full satisfaction promise from the date of delivery, which guarantees a full refund as long as the product is returned in new and unused condition. All leather pieces have a 25 year warranty against all defects in materials and workmanship.
If you’re buying as a gift and don’t have access to measure the current strap, or you just can’t wait until you get home to take the measurement, there are several factors to consider:
The main functional issue with respect to buying a guitar strap online is getting the length right. Our straps are measured from attachment hole to hole. The best way to determine your ideal length, or that of the musician you’re buying for, is to measure the previous strap. If you don’t have a strap to reference for whatever reason, we’ve assembled some general guidelines for length (supplemented with this friendly disclaimer: if you find our standard strap is too short, you can always add a jumbo tongue).
Elements to consider:
1. Player height and weight:
• In general, players who are 6’ and under, and average weight, should be fine with a standard length strap.
• Players over 6’, or with more weight, could use a jumbo tongue.
2. Electric or acoustic:
• Because acoustic guitar bodies are deeper, guitar players 5’10” and over will likely prefer a strap with the jumbo tongue.
3. Placement of attachment pegs:
• The strap attachment peg on the guitar can be in a couple of places. On some guitars the peg is at the top of the bout; on others, it’s placed where the guitar neck meets the body of the guitar. In the case of the latter, a few more inches will be needed, and a jumbo tongue might be the way to go.
4. How low or high the player holds their guitar:
• If the player is a rocker, with their guitar a bit below the waist, a jumbo tongue might be the way to go.
• If the player holds the guitar from the waist up, our standard length strap should do the trick.

It’s about more than just substance over style.
To me, substance is style. And I need mine straight up. I want to see and feel the proverbial natural wood grain, not have those precious imperfections buried under some glossy varnish or slick paint job.
Sure, I can appreciate Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound, but too many misguided people have since taken those walls and built a prison around the essence of music with one big, overproduced, sterile Pro Tools assembly line.
In my book, lifeless digital perfection has become the greatest imperfection, with hype and all the sonic trends du jour just more planned obsolescence. The expiration dates keep coming faster and faster.
Hey, don’t get me wrong. I’m not trying to climb on a high horse or tell anyone else how to live. I’ll leave that gig to the marketing executives. But, for my money, it’s the paths away from all the frills and ringtones that are worth traveling. In what I put out and take in, I’m after timeless quality.
Give me core components. Give me raw analog purity. Give me roots music. Give me something that skilled, dedicated human hands labored over and real sweat poured down on, whether a well-crafted tune or a custom-made guitar. Give me Wilco. Give me Keith Richards — on his acoustic. Give me Frank Sinatra in a small room with one mic, warm acoustics, and a little cigarette smoke.
Style is what you can do with less anyway. Anyone can put on a $5000 Armani suit. But look at James Dean in jeans and a plain white t-shirt. If you want to hear straight up style, well, no one with a top-of-the-line Strat and all the effects pedals in the world has yet to surpass what some of the original blues players could transmit through a busted, homemade, out-of-tune guitar.
That’s why we’re still listening to their scratchy recordings and probably always will be — there’s soul in simplicity and enduring power in the authentic.
And newsflash: there’s no ham in Spam and no humanity in Auto-Tune, folks.
That’s why I close my eyes to the packaging, to all the gimmicks and hollow obsessions with appearances, and just tune into sublime unprocessed sounds ringing true.
Straight up — no chaser.

The Way It Is.
There’s a thread you follow. It goes among things that change. But it doesn’t change. People wonder about what you are pursuing. You have to explain about the thread. But it is hard for others to see. While you hold it you can’t get lost. Tragedies happen; people get hurt or die; and you suffer and get old. Nothing you do can stop time’s unfolding. You don’t ever let go of the thread.
- William Stafford
When we purchased Anthology Gear in December of 2017, we were definitely changing course from the path we had been on for quite some time. But, as we hold on tight to this thread and head in this new direction, nothing has felt more right. El Camino pays tribute to the path we are destined to follow in life.

Some time in the heat of the summer of '19, we played hooky from our normal day-to-day work tasks and ventured to the other side of the river on a little treasure hunt in search of some special textiles. We rummaged through a countless number of rolls, piles and bolts of fabric and set aside those that called out to us. Some whispered, some shouted. We are excited to introduce our limited collection of textile and leather guitar straps.

Width: Available in 2" and 3" width
Length:
• Strap adjusts from 39" - 54" (See our Instragram post for Tongue Tying Tricks)
• For a long guitar strap (adjusts from 54" - 63"), add optional Jumbo Tongue (sold separately).
Top Leather: Carbon Black (full-grain leather)

The main functional issue with respect to buying a guitar strap online is getting the length right. Our straps are measured from attachment hole to hole. The best way to determine your ideal length, or that of the musician you’re buying for, is to measure the previous strap.

Comfortable and durable with style!
Industrial Grade Thread Even better, we use only the strongest industrial grade threads, the same threads used to make parachutes and airbags. That's strength you can trust.

My granddad Everett wore argyle socks and they fit him perfectly. Sophisticated and classy. And, at the same time, quirky and rebellious. This was Everett.
Everett was a very successful businessman. He worked door-to-door for most of his twenties, then city-to-city and eventually continent to continent as he got older. He liked to sample the local beers during his travels and managed to accumulate quite a large bottle cap collection from all over the world. In his free time he read books and taught himself to speak fluently in a handful of different languages. There was a lot about life that he loved such as giving out business advice (whether you wanted it or not), singing along with the opera he listened to on the radio, and showing off his impressive recollection of the bad words he picked up in all the countries he visited throughout his life.
When he finally settled down, he played golf every Sunday (in argyle socks, of course). He caught a ride on the back of his grandson's Harley to the golf course. He also began practicing yoga at the flexible age of 90. And he never left a party without reciting at least one cringe-worthy limerick for the guest of honor.
From the time I could crawl until the day we buried him, I never saw that man without a pair of argyle socks peaking out from the bottom of his trousers. Classy sophistication, with a bit of fun and rebellion. This was Everett. Argyle fit him perfectly. Maybe it fits you too.

I’m glad the folks manning the cubicles are there. God bless ‘em. They keep the trains running on time.
I just can’t join ‘em.
The equation doesn’t add up for my balance sheet. How could I maximize the potential of my imaginative horizons pounding the same meager square footage of pavement day in and out? Given all the ground under that great sky, the concepts of romance and destiny wouldn’t have much heft if confined to the girl next door. Yes, time is the only absolute boundary in this world, and with so little sand in the hourglass next to so much world, I need to spend my time ever moving.
Granted, it’s not a discovery shared by many, but the greatest thing I’ve found is the desire to never stop searching. Art, like life, is momentum. Whether a brush on a canvas or the vibrations of a string pushing molecules through the air, it’s all movement; energy collected and released.
Most people are taught to think in terms of inspiration coming to them, but without a journey there is nothing for the page or the stage. You have to go to the inspiration as sure as the earth revolves around the sun. After all, writing a song isn’t what happens in a room somewhere. That’s just the transcribing, the unpacking of what a broken heart or triumphant struggle collected out there.
Even before I fully grasped that immutable law of nature there was always a restless energy stirring in me, an inner metronome I couldn’t shut off. People tend to harbor hostility for the wanderer, for all the wayward sons and dreamers like myself, but they forget how much human progress has hinged on explorers and their unquenchable yearning to seek. Comfort and routine have their place, sure, but not in the pantheon of mortal achievement (sorry, inventor of the Snuggie) — and most definitely not in terms of pushing boundaries and leaving a lasting mark on music.
That’s why there’s never been anything aimless about my aimless wandering. I can hold a job. I’ve held more than most, in fact. I just don’t believe in holding one long enough to let it hold me. And you can rest assured, when all my wandering time is up, I won’t have regrets about where I didn’t go, what I didn’t do, what I didn’t see, taste, hear, and feel. My songs will all have been lived as well as written.
And, with a little wayward luck, they may even be sung long after my journey takes me from this world to the next.

The highest levels of creative fulfillment lie off the beaten path. Way off. Always have, always will. With no guide and no guarantees, it takes a lot of confidence to wander off and trust you’ll get there. Confidence and faith. Or total denial. (Actually, it’s pretty remarkable what can be accomplished with total denial — definitely an underrated worldview.)
This is why there are explorers and there are entertainers. While entertainers are everywhere, flocking to immediate approval, the relatively rare explorers heed the distant call of what we all want found but only they can locate.
When their search succeeds, they return with what makes music matter.
For me, it was involuntary. I don’t consider myself revolutionary or delusional, but given the way the music biz demands organized shelves of neatly canned, clearly labeled product, I soon found myself fleeing for where the category-resisting rebels hide out.
Call it the shadowlands.
From the earliest stages of my relationship to music, I’ve sought transcendence, to be transported to new spaces where I can stretch out and plant my flag. Whether those flying colors end up saluted by others is not my guiding concern. Recognition and appreciation are gratifying, sure, but clamoring for them strikes me as a dead end distraction.
So I’ve thrown my lot in with the explorers. But I don’t want to put anyone down. Believe me, I like earning a buck. I tried signing on for the backing band gig with a radio-friendly artist. I just couldn’t do it — couldn’t play for pay. To stay alive, my creative spirit needs to remain unshackled. Like a shark, my playing needs to keep moving.
Discipline, chops, and technique open more routes in the shadowlands, yes, but you can’t let them inhibit the journey. Thinking can get in the way. Sometimes a discovery happens in a single moment. Even in a single note. Players talk about getting in the zone or in a groove. The antenna just hits a frequency and it all seems to come from somewhere else, like a trance. You reach a place beyond yourself — and when that realm far afield from the limitations of the familiar is suddenly accessed, the biggest standing ovation or magazine cover could never compare. There is no map, but more discoveries always remain if you follow the radar of your natural gifts with hardnosed devotion.
So I explore the shadowlands, lost in my instrument.

You would swear the Bowery, boulevard of broken bums, was wider back then. Wider and darker. A lot darker. Not quite a total wasteland, but a stretch of dingy gas stations and seedy SROs, plus Burroughs still breathing in his bunker, that was more desolate than most can imagine today. The Palace Hotel was certainly no palace, and most definitely not some celeb-studded boutique.
Yet just below that feral flophouse, for exactly two U.S. dollars, you could walk right into CBGB’s, past the pinball machine, at the far end of its dark, smoky, acoustically potent tunnel-like interior, and witness The Ramones playing at the height of their power and glory.
Or Blondie. Or the Talking Heads. Or the Dead Boys. Yeah, there’s no stopping the cretins from hopping — and who, especially all these years later, would want to anyway?
Such is the spirit The Brat celebrates, with deep roots stretching all the way back to Brando’s 618 Perfecto leather jacket. His speed rush came from a Triumph Thunderbird; The Beatles’ came from Prellies, the black market weight loss pills abundant in Hamburg in the days before Brian Epstein took away their black leathers and Sid Vicious was only a toddler. By ’74, however, rock had become more like some polyester Renaissance faire than a snarling young Elvis or even just digestible, danceable AM pop.
So Joey, Dee-Dee, Johnny, and Tommy came along to lead us back to a better future. By subtracting the glam from the Dolls and the stoned meandering from the Stooges, they set countless others free to make even more from even less. Gabba Gabba Hey.
CBGB’s, unlike The Ramones, didn’t have a uniform, just the unifying principle of defiant originality. And that’s really as punk rock as punk rock ever got. Though when it comes to visually capturing that rebellious, uncompromisingly defiant, anti-mainstream spirit of it all, can anyone blame us for loving some classic Schott?
Classic is key, for The Brat, at its core, is about an ethos that transcends time and genre. Whatever music you play, that motivating force is breaking from the crowd when something truer calls — and the exhilaration of finding it.

Life burns. Everyone.
First time, we all flinch. No matter how severe or slight, that introductory searing sets even the toughest back a ways. It’s the sort of wake-up call that makes most want to go right back to sleep. Many soldier on regardless, at least for some distance, but with each successive scalding, the herd gets thinned. After a few bad burns, more and more are those who never recover. They recoil, tucking themselves away in the safety of the grey, the camouflage of the crowd.
And there, safely locked away, guarding the gates of their own prison, they wither — hollowed out by the forfeited loss of their only shot at connecting musically with something real and enduring.
Few are those who understand deep in their core that there’s no illumination without fire. Determined either by force of will or blessing of character to follow our path, our way through the standard-issue darkness, we’re the players who, for better or worse, keep our roots planted no matter how high the flames or strong the winds whipping up wildfires around them.
Yes, my failings and transgressions are legion, but going along to get along just ain’t one of them. Even my fiercest critics know I will never be swayed by the forces of the moment, never follow nor flee. I don’t do surrender. I don’t do scenes.
And so you have Blackwood, blessed byproduct of the scorching, evidence that it really is better to burn out than to fade away. Blackwood, the defiant, smoldering fruit of the ashes, a beautifully charred crucible of creative combustion, exists to endure. A state of grit as much as grace, Blackwood is stubbornly impervious to calculation, unyielding to dishonest modification of any kind.
There are countless varieties and every piece, by definition, is unique — radiating organic, weathered, carbon-based conviction, integrity, and experience. Singular like a deep scar, it won’t hold false surfaces or cover-ups. What you see — and hear— is only what has been burned there. Genuine. Meaningful. Resilient.
Even when it’s a style you don’t particularly care for, there is always something compelling about an artist who represents that style with absolute, unwavering authenticity. The difference is undeniable.
So brace for the inevitable trials by fire and, if you’re undeniable, like a phoenix from the ashes, you won’t be denied.
Slash and burn as to the Blackwood born.

None asked for, none expected, and none given — neither to myself nor anyone else.
Compromise may be unavoidable in life, but if you don’t dodge it at all costs in your music, enjoy the slippery slope to sucktown. Even if you find “suckcess” there, will the money paper over the shame of knowing you’re just another party clown for kids? I don’t think so, no matter how many clueless bedwetters you cram into a stadium or into your oh-so-“edgy” Kmart clothing line.
To me, it’s total commitment or stay home. How do I know when I’m warmed up? When the bloody calluses on my fingertips split open. I just seal 'em back up and keep on playing. (Hey, there’s a reason they call it Crazy Glue, not Well-Adjusted Glue. Trick-of-the-trade tip for you, compliments of the chef.)
Uncompromising is just the ante. I don’t care if you play the triangle in a basement bingo parlor. If you’re not standing up to push the limits, sit down. Forgo the struggle and you loose the soul, the blues. You loose Billie Holiday’s voice, Hendrix’s swirling feedback landscapes, Stevie Ray Vaughn’s eardrum-inverting bends. Hey, dedicated suffering comes with the gig. So while you might think my urge to stuff Justin Bieber in a rusty steamer trunk and kick it down the Grand Canyon is cruel, I’m just hoping to help the kid's music a bit, if possible. He seems like a nice girl.
Me, I’m a natural born attack dog. Tone. Style. Every element of a player’s sonic fingerprint stems from their attack, and on the fretboard I become an aggravated swarm of angel dust-addled Maori warriors wielding broken baseball bats. Unrelenting. Unforgiving. My sound leaves a mark. Every time.
And leaving a mark is really the only distinguishing characteristic human beings possess, yet 99.98% never even try. People are born creative and then those instincts are schooled right out of them. They climb into the mold and let everything unique be sliced away. They conform. Well, the operative syllable there is con. I say don’t fall for it. Fight.
No struggle, no sustain. And whatever gets thrown at me for turning my back on the soul-embalming, inspiration-crippling black hole of the rat race I just absorb and spit back at the bastards with my playing.
No compromises. No quarter.

They talk about people who see the glass as half full or half empty. But then there are folks like me — folks who can just never decide.
Uneasy souls, we keep staring at the damn glass like an abyss. I stare until my eyes hurt and neck aches, never sure, never satisfied. Out of frustration with knowing that glass can never be full, I’d rather empty it altogether and at least put the gnawing uncertainty to an end.
Stopped wondering why I’m that way a long time ago. If some people find peace easily in this life, well, I’m just not one of ‘em. In my corner, constant restlessness prevails. All the stuff that’s supposed to help, supposed to deliver that elusive satisfaction, doesn’t work for very long, if at all. You can seek relief with assorted thrills and escapes, whether sold on TV or on a dark street corner. You can self-medicate via substances, money, power, attention, possessions, conquests, and all the rest. But that dark cavern of emptiness always returns to collect, doesn’t it?
So I’m always wrestling with the light and darkness. When I’m in the light, the darkness calls to me like a temptress, and when I’m in the darkness, well, the light becomes so hard to find. Guess when you’re doing wrong, there is no knowing better.
And yet sometimes, when least expected, the beauty of it all comes back out of nowhere, penetrating even the deepest darkness like a flashbulb. It grabs me by the heart and steadies my trembling hands. For a few fleeting, but exhilarating moments I feel ashamed — ashamed for being such a wretch, a sinner, an ingrate. At those redemptive, humbling times, the glory is nearly more than I can bear. I find myself playing my guitar with such joy that the dirt falls from my fingers on its own.
Yes, there’s hope down there in the depths. Again and again, I’ve found it. Even after I’d stopped bothering to look.
The struggle keeps me honest, I suppose. Or close enough. I certainly don’t have a monopoly on pain, heartache, and trauma. I don’t even claim that the burdens of my load weigh heavier than anyone else’s. There’s no way of knowing. I pray for everyone these days. Having survived this long, all I know for sure is that, whatever the challenge or flaw or loss or confusion, the only way through is forward.
So I walk the line.

Led Zeppelin’s heavy-footed take on James Brown, “The Crunge”, clearly wasn’t recorded in Portland. Not only would Plant have easily found “that confounded bridge”, one preening backbend too far over his bellbottoms and he’d have tumbled off any number of them, straight into the Willamette River.
Bridge City, baby.
Speaking more to Jimmy Page’s stretched-low guitar strap swagger, we bring you Burnside, our tribute to those weathered hunks of rusting metal straddling the town’s central tributary like a hasty burst of staples punched in by some gigantic colossus the likes of which Plant rhapsodized about in his weirder, J.R.R. Tolkien-esque lyrics.
Bridges, after all, are indispensable and transporting — in music as well as daily life. As a practical matter, every guitar strap is a bridge connecting player and instrument, with load-bearing capacities that similarly depend upon the quality of construction, materials, and design. And if you don’t think a guitar strap affects tone, perhaps you haven’t played a third encore after nearly as many hours wielding a 50’s Les Paul. Not that it actually matters how, where, what, or why you play. Every shared bridge still serves singular journeys.
And, of course, music itself is the ultimate bridge. Between people. Between cultures. Between generations and eras. Between the heart and the feet. Between ourselves and our emotions. Between our imagination and our potential. Between one inspired artist and millions of listeners across countless places and moments in time.
Structurally speaking, the bridge, or middle eight, is nearly always the most transcendent part of a good song — emotionally lifting us up before dropping us back down on the other side; escaping the chorus-verse field of gravity to grab us by the collar and say, Look around. Take in the view.
Be here now.
Whether stairways to heaven or highways to hell, the guitar is our most reliable bridge there and back. And Burnside salutes players traversing those passages propelled by their sweat, soul, and fingers.
